WOW Cinema – “The House of Versace”

Itʼs Versace, ladies!
! My first thought when I watched the “House of Versace” trailer, apart of it seems quite interesting, was I bet Donatella Versace did not authorized it, no surprise the following days Iʼve read many statements from the company saying exactly that. Like everything in life when people say no, I just wanted to watch it even more.

The american TV network, Lifetime produced a documentary about the life, and death, of Versace family. But what the movie really shows us is an insight at the world of Donatella and the typical fashion designerʼs problems: drugs, drinking and some high ego, but donʼt you forget about the rehab. ! !

The TV film was based on a book by Deborah Ball, “House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival” published in 2010, that also had no involvement with the brand.

Gina Gershon plays Donatella and what a Donatella, the italian accent, all looks like the real designer. Directed by Sara Sugarman, Enrico Colantoni seems pretty convincing as Gianni Versace and Colm Feore plays the part of Santo Versace.

Daaarling, Versace was created by Gianni Versace in 1978 and “House of Versace” gives us a sneaky peek of the relationship between Gianni and his sister, Donatella, and their brother Santo. A kind of love and hate relationship, I must say, opinions always diverging between the designer and his sister.

Versace is considered to be the brand that created the supermodels, that turned the anonymous runway models into big stars, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista, they were all there.

Thatʼs one of the final photos of the Versace campaign we watch the recreation on the “House of Versace”. The campaign featured models Stephanie Seymour, Christy Turlington, Nadja Auermann, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer.

When July 1997 approaches, itʼs time to present the collection in Paris, but Gianni Versace goes to Miami and leaves the show to Donatella. We all now what happens and “House of Versace” doesnʼt show us many details on the murder of Gianni, donʼt hope for any police investigation information, but get to know all the drama Donatella Versace is
going to face.

Get out of the shadow of her brother, design the collections and take care of her family and two children, for Donatella, itʼs time to take larger doses of drugs and drinks. Versace sales fall to the ground and the brand is almost facing bankruptcy, a 120 million debt, 5 millions that Donatella owned herself and explained as business expenses: clothes, accessories, redecorating her apartment, come on, she had to live up to her image.

After Gianni Versaceʼs death, Donatella only had 20% of the company, her daughter, Allegra Beck owned a 50% share of it and steps in when she turns eighteen. Thatʼs a turning-point, when in summer 2004, itʼs time to send Donatella Versace to rehab at the Woodlands Rehabilitation Center. After some months, sheʼs back hoping to create a
name of her own.

As we hear more than once during the film, the Versace created by Gianni Versace was supposed to dress the sexy woman, not the elegant wives like Armani did, but the mistresses. When Donatella really finds her way and stops designing what she thought her brother would have done, she made Versace a brand for a sexy woman, but for an updated woman who would love the clothes and whose daughter would want to borrow the same pieces, letʼs not even talk about the mistresses, who would die to wear them too.
